RAG-Wasserstoffspeicher Pilsbach

The hydrogen storage facility in Pilsbach has been RAG Austria's central research facility since 2015. More than 10 years ago, the world's first attempt was made to store hydrogen together with natural gas in a pore storage facility (“Underground Sun Storage”). Over several years, hydrogen was initially added at a rate of 10% and subsequently up to 20%.

From 2018, further valuable insights were gained in the follow-up projects “Underground Sun Conversion” and “USC-FlexStore”, which laid the foundation for the 100% hydrogen storage facility in Rubensdorf. The “Carbon - Cycle Economy Demonstration” project is currently running at the plant, in which a sustainable and closed carbon cycle is to be established.

The hydrogen produced in Pilsbach has been certified as green hydrogen by TÜV Süd. This hydrogen could be marketed internationally to Germany for the first time in 2024 in the “H2 cross border” project.
