In RAG Energy Valley, methane electrolysis is used to decarbonize natural gas and make solid carbon usable as a raw material.
It is a valuable additive for soils that have been intensively used for agriculture in recent years. In addition, its use in the building materials industry, as a value material and for other special applications is being investigated.

Soil additive for agriculture
Solid carbon from methane electrolysis has a great potential to be used as soil enhancement material. Together with its partners, RAG has already carried out several planting and field trials and discovered that the application of solid carbon leads to an increase in plant growth and to a mobilization of nutrients. It also improves water availability for plants under drought stress conditions.
